Exhibition by Adelaide Artist Avril Thomas at Flinders Medical Centre “Theatre Works”
There were 42 paintings and drawings in this collection. The exhibition held at Flinders Medical Centre. Avril Thomas was Artist in Residence in the Operating Theatres at Flinders Medical Centre. The images were a broad range of portrait of portrait sketches and group paintings in a variety of mediums. Oil paintings, drawings and pastel artworks. The aim to portray the expertise, teamwork and humanity of surgical teams at Flinders. The artworks were handmade in a realist style using a restricted palette to create a sence of calm and endevour.

“Works of art are intended not only to capture a scene, but to evoke emotion about the events recorded. In this series of paintings and sketches we see the essence of the Operating Theatres at Flinders Medical Centre. This essence is teamwork and camaraderie. We also see her the strong element of humanity coming through an obviously technical and sterile environment. Staff personalities are evident from behind the masks and gowns.

Avril Thomas was then recruited by Adelaide University School of Medicine to make a 59 piece collection for the 125th celebration of the school. That exhibitions paintings and drawings – “A Day in the Life of Medicine” held in Bonython Hall – The works were also shown at Adelaide Convention Centre and in the School of Medicine.
