“Goolwa” Oil on canvas by Avril Thomas
Goolwa is just an hour’s drive south of Adelaide and is a historic river port where the River Murray mouth and Southern Ocean meet. The view is looking upstream near the bridge.
The artist remembers as a teenager staying in the caravan park (now gone – there is a car park now.) one Easter and getting rides on the ferry (also gone) across to Hindmarsh Island. This painting commenced during the Millennium drought in 2009. The water level was so low. Whilst painting it she watched people wade ankle deep to the centre channel. The foreground in the painting was altered sometime later.
